2024 RAM 1500 vs GMC Sierra 1500
The RAM 1500 is one of “the big three” alongside the iconic Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup trucks, but the GMC Sierra 1500 has been knocking on the door for many years. We thought we’d see how exactly our favorite pickup truck measures up to its competitor by pitting the 2024 RAM 1500 against the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 today, so check out some of the advantages each truck has over the other.
Powertrain
The RAM 1500 comes standard with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine that generates 305 horsepower alongside 269 pound-feet of torque and achieves an EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 19 mpg through the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The standard option for the GMC Sierra 1500 is a 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 310 hp and 430 lb-ft. of torque while achieving 19/22 mpg. In the RAM you can upgrade to a 5.7L HEMI V8 or 6.2L HEMI V8, boosting power to 395/410 and 702/650 respectively. The Sierra has three additional options with the highest offering being 420 hp.
Capabilities
When it comes to pickup trucks like these two, max towing capacity and payload are two of the most crucial specifications to take into consideration. For the RAM 1500, its base engine can tow up to 7,540 lbs while its upgraded 5.7L HEMI V8 boosts that number to 11,360 lbs., but the 6.2L drops back down to 8,100 lbs. The truck’s max payload ranges from 1,221 to 2,321 lbs. depending on various factors. The Sierra’s max towing ranges from 9,500 to 13,200 lbs. and max payload from 1,310 to 2,270 lbs.
Configurations
You’ll have plenty of different trim levels to choose from regardless of which truck you opt for, but what about cab styles, bed lengths and drivetrains? The RAM 1500 is available in either Crew Cab or QuadCab options, with bed lengths of either 5’7” or 6’4” and both 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrain options. The GMC Sierra 1500 on the other hand offers Crew Cab, Regular Cab and Extended Cab, alongside Standard Bed (6’6”), Long Bed (8’2”) and Short Bed (5’8”).
